Wonderfully Made Bag Giveaway Winner!

Juli-you won Lynne's gorgeous bag!

Please email me your mailing address!

First of all, I love the bag! And I love your blog! (I've learned so much since I started following) But I also love the black and white floral shift dress by Wonderfully Made. My question is: What type of shoes do I (48 year old mom and grandma) wear with boyfriend style jeans that taper in at the ankles? *ps- I liked you on Facebook :)

Thanks to all who entered and liked and visited Lynne's blog! Stay tuned for more giveaways in the future-or please contact me if you'd like to send me something to give away!

Virtual Clients

Virtual Clients-and a Giveaway of My Own!

I had two fantastic virtual styling sessions this weekend, and I cannot say enough about these two women! The first was GMarie from GMarie Sews. She's a super creative woman who sews a lot of her own clothes; she loves dresses and skirts and is not afraid of pattern and color. I LOVED working with her! Here's a picture of an outfit that she put together based on our styling session.

She wrote about embracing her shape and her inner Joan Holloway. Looking at this picture, I see many of the things we talked about: three interesting pieces (belt, dots, scarf-wait, four! booties!), accentuating the narrowest part of her body with a belt, and using color to draw the eye up to her face. I love this! Check out her blog for more pictures and thoughts as well as sewing tips and tricks.

My second virtual client of the weekend was Jennifer of The Old Painted Cottage. Since we had a virtual session, I don't have any images of her, but we had the best time! I hope she writes about it, and I will update you if she does, but we talked a lot about how she could show her creativity more in her clothing and about thinking of clothing as less of a uniform and more of a way to express herself. I knew that she'd had fun, too, when she texted me later, writing "You've created a monster!"  She's going to be helping me with some home decor design, including coming up with something beautiful for my virtual clients to look at behind my head when I'm sitting in my studio! I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

In honor of the New Year and these two new clients, the first person who emails me today requesting a virtual session will receive 1.5 hours of online styling with me for FREE. GO! Startclosein at gmail.com

How to Style a Maxi Dress or Skirt for Business Casual

How to Style a Maxi Dress or Skirt for Business Casual

I have to admit that this post is a bit of a lie. I'm going to write about how to hypothetically style a floor-length skirt or dress to wear to the office, but I have never actually done it. I see women wear floor length to work now and then, but I don't personally do it. I have a bit of a complex around not looking too young in my conservative office setting because I am often the youngest person in every meeting-by an average of 30 years. I often think a maxi would make me look shorter and younger so I just avoid them at work. But, after writing this maybe (just maybe, on a Friday?) I'll change my tune.

If you work in an office that's heavier on the casual part of business casual, we could talk for days. Once summer hits, let's maxi it up with sandals and bare feet, Toms, or little slip on shoes and little else aside from a straw hat. But for business casual in an office that's hard on the conservative dressing? It's tricky!

Pick a solid color or a classic print

There are a lot of wild maxi dresses out there that would be perfect for the beach-this is not the time for that, I don't think. Leave the paisley or tie dye at home and choose something in a solid print or a classic pattern like a stripe.

Asos
This is a beautiful option. Yes, I'd add a tank underneath to calm down that deep V neck and likely a cardigan or blazer on top, too.

Balance out the length with covered up arms

This isn't full length (but a gorgeous length on her that would work for all ages/shapes/sizes!), but I love how the 3/4 sleeves balance out the skirt on the bottom, which is quite full. This same concept would be great with a maxi skirt. You could also put a button down shirt over a maxi dress and belt it for a similar effect.

Another gorgeous look is to add a jacket or blazer over a longer length skirt. Again, not maxi length here, but a great look to copy!

Keep the shoes professional

Ok, so I've just figured out the number one reason why I don't wear maxi dresses to work: the shoes! I love to wear a long dress with boots, but I don't feel that it's the most professional look. And I still haven't mastered the whole walking in a long dress with heels on thing. What are the alternatives?

I'd go with a flat shoe that won't show much but will look professional when it does.

Sole Society

I'm kind of partial to a pointier toe, actually, so that you don't look like you're wearing sandals. I think the footless look that happens with a maxi length can read as overly casual for the office.

Asos

Beware high slits, low necklines, almost-nightgowns, and peep show legs

Anthropologie
Maxis are tricky ones! This Anthro number above seems great-classic print, nice modest neckline, not too tight...but look at that slit. Even with tights underneath, it's too beachy for my liking. This can also happen with white, pink, or other light colors in a maxi dress or skirt; beware of anything that reads at all like a nightgown.

Another common issue? Spot it here.

Via
If she buttoned the blouse more, the whole concept is perfect for work: solid color, covered arms, not tight. But, the see through gauze is too much information for the office, I'm afraid. She could add a slip, but I find a long flowing skirt to be very uncomfortable with a slip.

That's my two cents! I would be really interested in seeing pictures if anyone wears a maxi length to a business casual office. I'd love to feature you!

Wonderfully Made Bag Giveaway! Closed.

Wonderfully Made Bag Giveaway! (Now closed).

Happy Monday, everyone! I delayed posting today because I have some exciting news! I have a new giveaway for you! My incredibly talented client (and virtual blogger friend!), the creative genius behind Wonderfully Made and Ellen J Goods sent me two gorgeous bags that she sewed. I got to keep one-and the other is for a lucky reader!

Lynne sent me the prettiest box-all wrapped up with your bag-and mine.

And more goodies, like these incredible earrings!

I made my husband snap a blurry shot of me wearing both bags and my earrings and hugging my pom pom pillow!

I'm not letting go of the one you see in the foreground above, but I guess I'll hand over the brown and orange one...if I have to.

This bag is beautiful-it has a nice wide strap that won't dig into your shoulder, it's a longer length that would work for a taller woman or could also be tied up if you're shorter. It has pockets and pockets galore!

I love that the inside is a lighter fabric so you won't lose all of your keys and everything else in it, which always happens with my bigger bags!

Here's how to win: gain an extra chance to win this gorgeous bag with each item from below you that complete. Leave a comment telling me which you've completed. I'll announce the winner on Wednesday. You have until Tuesday at MIDNIGHT to enter. Please, please do not leave your full name or email address. I will have the winner contact me with that information on Wednesday. Have fun!

1. Visit Wonderfully Made and leave a comment telling me what's your favorite thing that Lynne has sewn.

2.  "Like" StartCloseIn on Facebook.

3. Post a styling question you'd like me to answer in the comment section.

Feel free to share with any friends you think would love to win this bag!

Happy Love Yourself Love Others Love Life Day!

Happy Love Yourself Love Others Love Life Day!

A few weeks ago, I was honored to help Love Always Hannah in styling a Valentine's Day shoot as part of the YouSparkle collaboration she started in the DC metro area. Hannah had the most beautiful vision for a feminine, fun, sugar-sweet shoot that would also incorporate making handmade cards for victims of human trafficking. Hannah has this innate ability to combine beauty with meaningful action that rubs off on everyone around her. She's contagious. I can't believe my good luck in meeting Hannah so many years ago in Spain and that we have the chance to collaborate on shoots like this today!

Today's post is mostly pictures from our fun, feminine looks, which was a pleasure for me since I don't tend to wear a lot or style a lot of pink! Hannah encouraged me to embrace the pink-and I'm so glad that I did! We had a lot of fun working with creative women from around DC on this one-from florals to makeup, cakes to models and cards and photography, these women were a blast to hang out with and collaborate with! So enjoy. Enjoy today-enjoy being a woman. Maybe even wear a little pink!

And here we are-the women behind the scenes of the shoot!

Natural Beauty Products-Yay or Nay?

Natural Beauty Products-Yay or Nay?

Spoiler alert: mostly yay.

A few weeks ago, I got some new beauty products from Whole Paycheck. I go back and forth on what products I use on my face and body, and I try to use natural products as often as possible. Of the three items that I got, I love the jasmine skin oil and the sensitive facial cleanser, but the Zuzu lipgloss is a miss.

The body oil smells incredible (if you like jasmine) and softens your skin like no lotion will. I love using it after a shower or bath, but if your skin is really dry, you could always put it in the water of a bath or put it on your dry spots before showering.

The facial cleanser is akin to a Cetaphil or other gentle cleanser without parabens, sulfates, etc. It doesn't smell at all and is very, very gentle. I have incredibly sensitive skin, and it's gentle enough for my skin. It takes off makeup, though, so I do know that it is doing a good job of cleaning.

I wanted to like the lipgloss since it seems best to use lip products that are less toxic since you end up consuming them. But, it doesn't stay on. The color starts off very bright (almost too red) and then quickly fades to a sort of cherry chapstick look. Not recommended.

Do you have any favorite natural products you swear by? I'd love to know!

Spring Sales are Here!

Spring Sales are Here!

Get excited. Today I'm sharing my top picks from all of the (we wish it were) spring sales that have popped up! Pun intended.

Dresses

Right now is a great time to buy dresses because they're the easiest thing to wear now with layers over (blazers, cardigans, sweaters) and under them (tights, boots, leggings, white button downs or long-sleeved shirts) and later with bare legs and sandals or flats. Here are a few favorites on deep sale.

Asos Curve (add some tights if the length is too short for you!)
Madewell

I love the idea of a neutral dress right now that you can make wintery with deep jewel tones or black and then transition into spring with brights, coral, mint, or white.  Madewell has more universally flattering shapes that are timeless, too. Like this and this.

Pants-especially cropped ones

For now, wear these bad boys with low boots, flats, heels, etc. I love a good cropped pant for spring, too, though, making these a great buy to wear now and later.

Jcrew's come in petite and tall and are on sale.

JCrew
Madewell

Versatile Weekend Tops

When stores come out with new t-shirts, they often put the not-so-new ones on sale. This is your moment to swoop in and grab a few! I love a t-shirt that has modal as well as cotton since it''ll be softer. JCrew does this well, and the designs are not too young. Ignore the styling here since the vibe is far too high school. Imagine instead with a dark wash jean and a blazer or leather moto jacket on top. Divine.

Madewell

So whether you're shopping a sale or shopping your closet, I recommend taking stock now of things you have that you haven't worn lately because you consider them to be "off season." Now is a great time to pull some of those items out of the shadows to enjoy them! It might help us all feel like spring is just around the corner!

Valentines Day Gift Guide

Etsy Valentines Day Gift Guide

Not that you need to buy more things, but here are some beautiful handmade ones if you want to.

For your mom (or new moms or grandmas) who knows the value of keeping her feet warm and who deserves something adorable to look down at that remind her how loved she is.

Felted wool slippers

For your best friend who lives in a place with cold weather but you both wish still lived with you in Texas.

Beanie with Detachable Pom Poms
For your husband who always has the latest, most advanced technology and whose old-school side you're always striving to bring out.

Vintage Alarm Clock (not best used as an alarm clock, seller adorably notes)

For your other best friend who just bought a house with a big yard perfect for gardens, orchards, and chickens. She'll be outside a lot and needing a chic head accessory to go with those peg leg overalls.

Head Bow Scarf
And while you're on the subject of beautiful heads, for your sister who can seemingly grow hair overnight and always looks like her truest self with her head wrapped brightly. She can make herself one but likely won't.

Head wrap

For your life partner, brother, father-in-law, stepfather, or dog's favorite uncle who has lots of things and doesn't want much else but you want them to have beautiful things, too. Light and flat enough to be slipped into a card.

Leather key fob
For your dear friend, cousin, or family member who is about to give birth and won't be pregnant anymore very soon and who will be breastfeeding! (You can do it. All of it.)

100% cotton kaftan for around the house
And, finally, for yourself. To put up in your bathroom mirror or anywhere else you'll see it every day.
