Buying Things Outside Of My Comfort Zone On Sale

Buying Things Outside Of My Comfort Zone On Sale

You know how people talk about "keeping it real"? These pants right here and these super comfort clogs? That's real. The pants seem a little...white, don't they? Why yes, my huge Bernese Mountain Dogs did run between my legs before I took this top down selfie. Just keeping it real.

But this post isn't about clogs or dogs. It's about sales-and the opportunities that sales afford us to stretch our style wings a little. What if you took a great sale as the chance to buy something that you might not normally wear just to try it on for a little bit? What if you thought of a sale like a summer fling, a chance to get a little wild?

Here's how I wore three prints on one day with a patterned shirt I'd usually never buy!

On Black Friday, I found myself choosing clothes for my husband and my mother-in-law. At some point, I escaped to Old Navy. It might surprise you to learn that I don't like shopping for clothing for myself with anyone other than my best friends, sister, or mom. I know what I like, and I also end up styling anyone else I'm with rather than buying things for myself.  Suddenly, though, I found myself with time alone and a dressing room to try on some new things that wouldn't cost me much.

The plaid shirt didn't fit great over my chest, and it was also too neutral to count for my boundary-stretching. The lace shirt, on the other hand? It came home with me since it was my comfort zone black mixed with lace, which I have barely any of. A perfect sale deal.

Oh boy! Next up were both colors and patterns. You may know by now that I love stripes above all other patterns with polka dots close behind. I rarely if ever wear florals or geometric shapes. A sale was the perfect chance to try on something new.

Both came home with me! This pink-trimmed cardigan, on the other hand...

Did not. It was just not me at all, and it didn't push my boundaries in a good way. I could tell that even if I bought it, it would sit in my closet on a shelf.

This big ol' square poncho shawl sweater deal did come home with me, in a size bigger than normal so I could just wear it like a blanket. I've worn it already with a soft Cuddle Dud shirt underneath. And if you're looking for a sweet little Christmas sweater of your own, I thought these reindeer were pretty cute. I'd love to see a patterned button down collar sticking out under this, maybe a red plaid?

All clothes are from Old Navy. Not a sponsored post because, so far, I don't do those.

  1. Cute! I love the reindeer sweater...if only it would get cold enough to wear a sweater AND layer a shirt under it. I like the poncho and patterned top as well...hm, Old Navy may be in my future soon. Lol.

    1. Hahha you don't have to have a shirt underneath! Or it could be short sleeved or sleeveless with a collar!

  3. I know they're not the point of the post but I love those jeans on you. The patterned top is cute and I want want want that knitted poncho! The two times I've been to the states as a grown up I have raided Old Navy both times. If I could guarantee my size and didn't have to pay stupid customs charges I wouldn't even mind the shipping charges!

    1. Thanks, Victoria! They're from Gap and are a boyfriend style. Got them on super sale probably due to the holes but they're so comfy! Where do you live?

  4. Hi Ella. I'm in London. So lots of great shops but I love Old Navy for cheap and cheerful. I can't fit in Gap jeans unfortunately. Long Tall Sally is great for tall girls. Jeans go up to 38" leg! Although admittedly I'm only 5'10". You might want to take a look out of interest as they ship internationally.
I forgot to say that I loved the black lace top too. I'm going away for Christmas so have splurged a bit on new clothes. A black lace dress with peplum waist. Surprised it suits me as they normally emphasise my bum too much. Also a great black velvet with three quarter sleeves and a low back. I also edged out of my comfort zone with leather look leggings and I love them! Christmas is about new clothes right? :-)
